Veggie Month 1.10.
- 1.11. 2010

The aim of "Veggie
Month" is to celebrate vegetarianism and veganism as a healthy
lifestyle and a way to save the lives and alleviate the suffering of
animals. It is also aimed at promoting (publicizing) animal rights
through non animal testing, eliminating the fur industry, or "entertainment"
such as circuses and bullfights. Veggie Month wants to draw
attention to the fact that if we all became vegetarians, world
hunger would end.
As the month of vegetarianism and veganism, October is marked by two
important days: World Vegetarian Day celebrated on October 1st, and
The International Day of Veganism [World Vegan Day], which is
celebrated on November 1st. We would be especially pleased if it
were possible to celebrate these days with events throughout the
Czech Republic.
It is very difficult to determine which of the two days deserves
more attention, but if it wouldn’t be humanly possible for some
cities to hold two decent events in one month, then just for this
year we would propose to focus more on world vegetarian day (October
1st). This is because the 1st of October falls on a Friday whereas
the 1st of November is a Monday and generally speaking, Friday are
better for hosting events rather than Mondays.
In the midst of these two international days there are also other
important dates to be celebrated but more on these later. In
particular, we would like to draw attention to a series of lectures
(and possibly screenings) to be held in as many cities as possible.
If you choose to take part in Veggie Month, its all up to you how
much and in what manner you arrange your events.
How can you become involved?
- Organize an event in October with the theme of veggie or Animal
Rights;
- Let us know (email:
mesic.info@veggie-parade.cz or phone 737731957 or write it into
our online calendar at
http://doodle.com/89h2qsimmzrfk3is).
Important dates
during Veggie Month are:
October 1st – World
Vegetarian Day
This day was inaugurated in 1978 as the International day of
Vegetarianism by the International Vegetarian Union (IVU) only a
year after it was first celebrated by pioneering American activists
from NAVS (National Anti Vivisections Society). Its aim is to
promote all the advantages of vegetarianism / veganism - the ethical,
medical, environmental and others. It is Veggie Parade’s dream and
ambition to establish celebrations across the entire country on this
day, in all regional towns - and as is becoming evident (why?), not
just in these :-)
As this day happens to fall on a Friday this year, to us it seems
that the most appropriate celebration of the event would be in a
club, not only because it is a Friday but because it makes a great
reason for a night out [to have a party]. But as mentioned, the type
of event and its intensity is pretty much up to you.

November 1 – World Vegan Day
This day was first celebrated in 1994, on the 50th anniversary of
the (British) Vegan Society with which it is closely associated. It
is possible to link this event with All Souls Day which falls on the
next day and to give it a spiritual feel, for instance a march with
candles, again in as many cities throughout the Czech Republic as
possible. At the same time though, veganism undoubtedly deserves its
own celebration which should act as a fitting culmination of Veggie
Month. There are no bounds to your imagination and resourcefulness!
October 2 – World Farm Animals Day
The World Farm[ed] Animals Day (WFAD) was also originally founded in
America in 1983 through the initiative of FARM (Farm Animal Rights
Movement). This day is also the UN sponsored International Day of
Non Violence which was established on Mahatma Ghandi’s birthday (he
was incidentally also a vegetarian).
The following is an excerpt from the wfad.org web page:

It is truly a shame that the Czech Republic is missing from this
account (perhaps there was something on at the time but no one
bothered to let them know?). This year the 2nd of October falls on a
Saturday which is an ideal day for a street event. We are planning a
similar event for Prague to that which was held in Austria last year
but we’re hoping that (fake) blood will also be spilled on the
streets of many other cities ;-)
From the 4th of October – a series of lectures (screenings
etc…) to be held throughout the country.
If you are able to put on such an event (Team Veggie Parade stands
ready to assist you ;-) ), please select a suitable date from our
on-line calendar at xxxx Please ensure that the date does not clash
with any other events to be hosted. Don’t worry, the on-line
calendar is super easy to use and just to illustrate, we have
already pre filled the 12th of October when we are hoping to put on
a lecture in Prague.
Sunday 3rd of October – Vegetarian Day of the Czech
Vegetarian Society (ČVS)
Every 1st Sunday in October the Czech Vegetarian Society hosts an
all day celebration at Prague’s Toulcův Court (Toulcův Dvůr).
See xxx for details of last year’s event
Saturday, October 16th – UN World Food Day
Sunday, October 17th – UN International Day for the Eradication of
Poverty
It is well known that with regards to the use of agricultural crops,
vegism is a far more (economically and environmentally) sustainable
lifestyle than meat eating. It would also be appropriate to arrange
something to celebrate this weekend, either by way of a street event,
a public screening, or a handout of information leaflets…
Throughout the month (but not only that month!) – Food not Bombs
Free vegan food handouts (not to mention other aspects of FNB) are
also a fantastic way to promote vegism.
Any group that agrees to have their event included in the Veggie
Month calendar will be more than welcome!
Every Friday – public screenings of Otevři Oči (Open your eyes) in
Prague
…and this is just the beginning ; -)
